#ThreeThingsThursday: Flywheel Edition
/If you all have been following my Instagram, Twitter or Facebook lately, you can tell that I have gotten back in the saddle at Flywheel and am loving it!
For those that don't know, I have been battling an injury (or two) this marathon training cycle. As a result my daily running has been reduced to once a week (with a rare second run if needed).
To compensate I have been upping my swimming (2-3 times a week) and cycling/spinning (2-3 times a week). Plus my strength training class, 2 mornings a week. I am doing everything I can to build up the muscles to support my left hip and take the pounding off of my right knee.
Since I can only take so much time on the bike trainer in my living room, I have made an effort to return to Flywheel (as my wallet allows).
Now what sets Flywheel apart is the Torqboard.
Every Flywheel studio features two Torqboards - large screens that display leaderboards a few times during each class. So if you're at all competitive, you may opt in to participate in our Torqboards and find out how you rank against other riders.
For every ride you take, we capture a list of performance metrics that we post in your private account on our website. It's real data in real time. Which means, as soon as class is over, you can log on and see your stats, like how fast and how strong you rode, along with how this compares to your previous rides and how you rank against other riders. You'll see metrics for RPM's, Torq, Speed, Power, Distance and even Calories Burned. This allows you to set your own goals and measure your performance over time.
1) Coworkers Sharing In The Fun
Over the past few weeks I have convinced not one, but two of my coworkers to join me for a Flywheel class. :) I really wanted to hang out with them both, but not just do the typical dinner. They were both in town for work events.
They both kicked some serious butt. For one, it was his first Spin class ever and the other, he usually rides at home on his Peloton bike so this was a little different for him.
It was awesome seeing them dig deep and give it everything they had. Thankfully the instructors are great at going over the positions we would be riding in before class started and the "fly angels" were available to help them set up their bikes.
I am really thankful that my colleagues were open to my suggestion of adding activity in to our night out on the town. Let me tell you for the first we hit up Sweetgreen after and for the second it was an Irish pub. Both post-spin meals hit the spot. It was nice that the second came with beer. ;)
Both said they would be up for another class next time they are in town! WOO!!
2) Pushing Outside Of My Comfort Zone
I went to my first Flywheel class in 2014. I hit 261 that day. Between 2014-2015, I went to 8 classes and recorded scores on the board between 257 and 296. I had NOT been able to break the magic 300 mark. In 2016, I didn't make it to a single class.
But when I recommitted to "me" and finding what makes me happy in January 2017, I knew getting back in the saddle would need to be a part of that plan.
I stepped back into the Flywheel Studio on Feb 21. Since then I have taken 5 classes and you know what????
All but 1 have been OVER 300! Saaayy wwhhaa???
Feb 21 - 310
Feb 23 - 291
March 2 - 342 ---- PR CITY
March 8 - 314**
Tonight - 331
**My computer wasn't working so it missed the first 5 min of class before they moved me to another bike
Do you like how the pics are all out of focus? My body and arms are so tired after that they shake while I try to hold the phone up to snap a pic. Hahahah! :P
I'm wicked proud that my two highest scores (342 and 331) have come on Thursday nights with Melinda AFTER I did an hour on the bike in the morning.
Dare we say I am getting stronger?
Well I am digging deep in each class and reminding myself this WILL pay off on Heartbreak Hill next month.
3) My Flywheel Fundraiser For Tedy's Team
I am wicked honored that my Tedy's Team teammate and friend Melinda will be leading this special 45-min Flywheel class on Sunday, April 2 at 2:30pm. I would love to see you in the saddle with me. Class is $40 and all proceeds benefit Tedy's Team and my 2017 Boston Marathon run.
REGISTER HERE
Some day I would love to hit the lottery and get a Flywheel membership, but for now I will save my pennies to go when I can.
Have you tried Flywheel? What are your thoughts?
